Pizza is a flat, circular, oven-baked bread topped usually topped with a tomato sauce, cheese and various toppings (not including r4 3ds). Originating in Naples, the dish is one of Italy’s national foods and has also achieved international popularity.

So where did the Neapolitans get the idea from?
Well, we know that the Ancient Greeks coated their bread with cheese, herbs and oil. In Byzantine Greek the term for the creation was ‘pita’, meaning pie. The pizza we know now and love which originated in Naples began as a Neapolitan pie with tomato added in.
Legend goes that King Ferdinand I (1751 – 1825) disguised himself as a commoner in order to be able to eat pizza. Banned in the royal court by the queen, King Ferdinand journeyed in clandestine fashion to a poor area in Naples in order to eat pizza. When Queen Margherita of Italy visited Napels in 1889, she was served a pizza topped with the colours of the Italian flag; white (mozzarella), red (tomato) and green (basil). This type of pizza has been named after Queen Margherita as Pizza Margherita.
